The chair gently elevates the patient so he can place his remaining foot on the pedestal making it a lot easier for the doctor to access the stump.
For patients with amputations above the knee the cast has to be made in a standing position. The chair then lowers it´s seat and remains as a frame for the patient to hold onto.
